Suzanne Picot and Robertson Bales are long time Yukoners who arrived here in the early 1980’s separately. However, they met while both living in Victoria, B.C. in 1993. Together they melded their interests in travel and working overseas and formed a photo/writing team and headed off to Indonesia where they were married in Bali. In the Philippines they met their mentor and faced their most challenging work with a non-government, child focused organization. Their life path was then deviated to Ecuador for further work with this organization, which lasted nearly 4 years and ended up in Colombia. By this point, Rob and Suzanne were more than ready to find a peaceful home base and did so in 1999 when they found the log cabin on Crag Lake. Rob built a near duplication for guests from local materials, which was finished in June 2007.

your host Suzanne PicotSuzanne originates from New Brunswick and arrived in the Yukon in 1980. She had an eclectic series of jobs ranging from day care worker to cosmetics sales person at a department store. In 2006 she graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work, following what she calls “the 20 year plan”. Her formal education led her to examine her interest in stress management and self care practices. The Dunroamin’ Retreat is an extension of her personal philosophies to battle this common ailment, thru home cooking, creativity within a natural rugged environment and being part of a healthy community. Journal writing has been her constant life anchor for over 30 years.

Robertson BalesRobertson Bales came to the Yukon from Ontario via Fort McMurray where he worked in the mining industry. Rob’s passion has long been in photography following his studies at Conestoga College, however he was sidetracked for over 20 years. In 1993 he decided to attend the Western Academy of Photography for photojournalism in Victoria in order to seriously attend to his global interests. He has worked as a professional photographer ever since, specializing in social documentaries and has an on site traditional darkroom. You can see his work at:
